The Rambouillet Palace

The Château de Rambouillet, which is the summer residence for the Presidents of France, is located in the town of Rambouillet, 30 miles southwest of Paris.

The Château was originally a simple fortified manor dating back to 1368. Over time it was converted into a glorious Renaissance style château.

In 1783 the château became the property of the Crown, purchased for Louis XVI as a gift to the Queen, who detested it for its gothic character.

In an attempt to change her opinion the King secretly commissioned the construction of the famous Dairy (La Laiterie), where the buckets were made from porcelain, painted and grained to imitate wood.

Napoleon used Rambouillet as an occasional official residence. With the Restoration, Rambouillet passed once more to the Bourbons; on July 30, 1830, King Charles X of France signed his abdication here, bringing to an end the Bourbon dynasty.

In February 1896, Rambouillet received a visit from President Félix Faure who had decided to spend his summers there. Since then, Rambouillet has become the summer residence of Presidents of the Republic who entertain and give hunting parties for visiting dignitaries.

In November 1975 the first "G6" summit was held here for the leaders of the world's leading industrialized countries.

There are many canals, fountains and ornamental lakes in the splendid grounds of the Château de Rambouillet. This is a spectacular château which should not be missed on you Paris Pass sightseeing tour.
